Hog Hub

A purpose built rescue, nature classroom and plant-based community café for Wild Hogs Hedgehog Rescue.

Wild Hogs Hedgehog Rescue has been running since 2010. The rescue is a registered charity 1168800 and rehabilitates over 300 hedgehogs every year.

We are fundraising to build a new purpose-built rescue to enable us to help more hedgehog and we need your help! Help us reach our target by donating to our Just Giving Campaign here.

Why do you need a new rescue?

The rescue currently has capacity for 21 hogs in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 21 hogs in rehabilitation. Over the past few years, admissions have increased to over 300 per year and simply put, we need more space!

All of  your donations go towards helping the hedgehogs. We fundraise by holding events, running activities and at present, the rescue does not have a dedicated space for monthly carer meetings, training, volunteer thank you events, fundraising and educational activities or storage to enable all of these things to happen.

What are the plans?

Hog Hub will be an environmentally friendly wooden structure, making minimal impact on the land. The surrounding area will be managed as a nature reserve creating a biodiversity net gain for the area. Improved grassland or brownfield sites to reclaim for wildlife would be ideal for this development. The site needs to be at least one acre of land and ideally more to create a space for wildlife.

Purpose built rescue

The rescue building will consist of a reception area, office, ICU, Rehab and treatment room. A research lab, kitchen and storage will complete the building. One member of staff will be required to stay on site at all times to deal with emergencies. A one bedroom bed-sit will be part of the design. The layout in the photo is an example of how the rescue could be built.

Nature Classroom

The Hog Hub classroom will provide a range of holiday, after-school and weekend activities to inspire people to engage with nature. The informal sessions will be affordable and the outdoor space will also be used to enhance learning opportunities.

Wild Hogs Hedgehog Rescue holds an annual Open Day where the public are able to access the rescue and see the hedgehogs in care. The classroom will enable further opportunities using technology to connect to the rescue with cameras in hutches and cages.

Plant-based Cafe

The plant-based community café will welcome dog-walkers and animal friendly families. The café will use locally sourced organic produce and support local traders and suppliers in the area.

How much will it cost?

We plan to raise £200,000 in total to bring Hog Hub to life.

Phase 1: £50,000 start-up

This will be generated through online donations, auctions and the online shop.

Donations will be encouraged through a new text donate and online portal and a rescue campaign will be started.

Funds from this phase will be used to apply for outline planning permission, initial land search costs and deposits.

Phase 2: £150,000 grant funding

Grant funding will be applied for to match the donations of the public. Funding applications for capital community, education and environmental projects have been identified and applications will be submitted.

Funds from this phase will be used to purchase the land and buildings.

Phase 3: £50,000 final costs

The final phase of funding will be generated from local businesses to provide work or goods in-kind e.g. electrical wiring, plumbing and decorating. Specific donation requests will be made to cover any equipment, work or services
